A vertical megacity stacked across the steep hills where the Yangtze meets the Jialing. Nothing here is flat: monorails run through apartment blocks, cable cars swing over the water, and escalators climb whole neighbourhoods. By night its stilted palaces, bridges and towers blaze with light — a cyberpunk skyline that is, remarkably, entirely real. Chongqing is China at its most cinematic, and its most deliciously fiery.
2–3 nights
March–May and October–November; Chongqing is one of China's hottest cities in July and August
90 minutes by high-speed rail from Chengdu; direct flights from most Chinese hubs
The city is built on cliffs — expect stairs, escalators and monorails that pass through apartment blocks

Hongyadong looks like a fever dream: eleven storeys of golden stilt-house palaces stacked against a cliff. Explore its lanes and terraces, then take a boat out onto the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing as the whole city ignites. From the water, the towers, bridges and hillside lights rearrange themselves into a skyline that seems to have no ground floor at all.

Chongqing's infrastructure is the attraction. Watch the Liziba monorail slide straight through a residential tower, ride the Yangtze River Cableway across the water, climb the Kaixuanmen escalators up a hillside, and stand at the crossroads where three levels of the city meet. A guided '8D walk' makes sense of a city that famously cannot be understood from a map.

A 360° rotating stage whips the audience through a sweeping, technically dazzling epic of revolutionary martyrdom. It is state-of-the-art spectacle with a deliberately patriotic, 'red-culture' message — we brace Western travellers for the tone in advance, because the craft on stage is genuinely superb.

The Yangtze Three Gorges cruise is one of China’s most iconic river‑travel experiences. Sailing along the mighty Yangtze River between Chongqing and Yichang, it combines breathtaking natural grandeur, thousands‑year‑old literary history and world‑class modern engineering into one relaxing journey.
"For the Hongyadong glow without the crush, come at dusk and shoot the skyline from the quieter Nanbin Road across the river."
Chongqing is the most vertical, most cinematic city in China and the traditional gateway to the Three Gorges. It pairs naturally with Chengdu — 90 minutes by rail — and works as the embarkation point for a Yangtze river journey. Give it two or three nights, and come hungry.
